The Thai Monk Blessing Ceremony - Steps and What to Prepare

The Monk Blessing Ceremony (พิธีสงฆ์) is typically the very first event of a traditional Thai wedding day. Rooted in Buddhist traditions, this ceremony focuses on making merit to ensure a blessed and prosperous married life. For couples unfamiliar with Buddhist rituals, here is a simplified guide.

Essential Items to Prepare

  1. Altar Set (Mu Bucha): A Buddha statue, incense, and candles.
  2. Seating for 9 Monks: Raised platforms or mats, equipped with spittoons, water glasses, and tissues.
  3. Holy Thread (Sai Sin): A white cotton thread wrapped around the Buddha statue and passed along the hands of the monks during chanting.
  4. Holy Water Bowl: Filled with water and auspicious leaves, used for blessing the couple.
  5. Sangkhatan & Envelopes: 9 sets of everyday necessities (alms) and cash donation envelopes for the monks.
  6. Food (Meal Offering): A full meal prepared for the monks.

The Ceremony Sequence

  1. Lighting the Altar: The groom and bride jointly light the candles and incense at the Buddha altar to officially begin the ceremony.
  2. Requesting the Precepts: The MC (often a layman familiar with Buddhist chants) leads the congregation in requesting the Five Precepts in Pali.
  3. Monks Chanting: The monks chant auspicious sutras. During this, a holy candle is lit and dripped into the water bowl to create Holy Water.
  4. Food Offering: The couple and their parents present the meal to the monks respectfully.
  5. Offering Alms (Sangkhatan): After the monks finish eating, the couple presents the 9 gift sets and donation envelopes to them.
  6. Water Pouring (Kruad Nam): As the monks chant a specific blessing, the couple pours water from a small vessel into a bowl to transfer merit to their ancestors.
  7. Holy Water Blessing: The lead monk will sprinkle holy water on the couple and the guests, and sometimes apply three dots of holy powder on the couple's foreheads. The monks then depart.
