What to Do After Registering Your Marriage in Thailand (Name Change Guide)

You’ve gone to the district office (Amphoe), signed the documents, and received your beautiful Marriage Certificate. You might think you're done... but wait!

If you and your spouse have decided to change your last name or title, there is a whole list of administrative tasks waiting for you. Here is the ultimate post-marriage paperwork checklist to keep you sane!

(Note: This guide primarily applies to Thai citizens updating their local documents.)

1. House Registration & Thai ID Card 💳

This is step one! All other institutions will require your new ID card before they update your records.

  • Where: The District Office (Amphoe or Khet) where your House Registration is located.
  • What to bring:
    1. Original House Registration book (Tabien Baan)
    2. Original old ID card
    3. Original Marriage Certificate (Kor Ror 3) and Registry (Kor Ror 2)
  • What to do: Inform the officer you need to update your name/title in the House Registration and apply for a new ID card.
  • Timeline: Try to do this within 60 days of your marriage registration.

2. Passport ✈️

Once your ID card has a new name, your old passport becomes legally inconsistent.

  • Where: Department of Consular Affairs (Passport Office).
  • What to bring: Your new ID card, old passport, and a copy of your Marriage Certificate.
  • Warning: If you have already booked your honeymoon flights under your maiden name, do not update your passport yet! Travel with your old passport and maiden name to match the ticket, then update your passport when you return.

3. Bank Accounts & Credit Cards 💰

  • Where: Your bank's branch. (Call ahead; some banks require you to visit the exact branch where you opened the account).
  • What to bring: New ID card, Marriage Certificate, and your bank book.
  • Credit Cards: You usually need to call the bank's Call Center to request a new card with your updated name mailed to you.

4. Driver’s License & Vehicle Registration 🚗

  • Where: Department of Land Transport.
  • What to bring: New ID card, Marriage Certificate, old driver's license, and your vehicle registration book.

5. Other Crucial Updates 📋

  • Your HR Department: To update your payroll, Social Security, and taxes.
  • Insurance Policies: Call your agent to update your name and, if necessary, change your designated beneficiaries.
  • Utility Bills: (If the house is in your name) Update your water, electricity, and internet bills via their apps or shops.

💡 Planner's Tip: Make 10-20 photocopies of your Marriage Certificate and your New ID Card before you start this journey! You will need to hand over a signed copy at almost every single office. Having them pre-signed and ready in a folder will save you hours of queuing.
