The Ultimate Survival Guide for the Groom

When it comes to wedding planning, the spotlight is almost always on the bride (and her dress!). But wait a minute... a wedding is about two people. Grooms, it is your day too! You need to look incredibly sharp and handle your responsibilities like a boss.

As a wedding planner, I’ve put together the "Ultimate Groom Survival Guide." Here is everything you need to know and do. Let’s go!

1. Nailing the Suit 👔

A wedding suit is not a casual off-the-rack purchase. Investing in a custom, tailored suit is the best decision you will make.

  • The Morning Suit: Thai morning ceremonies (like the Khan Maak) involve walking outside. Choose light colors (beige, light grey) and breathable fabrics.
  • The Evening Suit: Time to look sharp! A classic tuxedo (black or midnight blue) or a well-structured wool suit.
  • The Details: Don’t forget your tie/bowtie, cufflinks, and freshly polished leather shoes. (Pro tip: Break your shoes in a few weeks before the wedding to avoid blisters!)

2. Grooming & Skincare 🧴

Your bride has been going to the clinic for months. You can’t show up looking tired!

  • Skincare Routine: Start using a daily moisturizer and sunscreen at least 3 months prior. If you have acne issues, visit a dermatologist early.
  • Hair & Beard: Get your haircut 1-2 weeks before the wedding (so it settles into a natural shape). On the morning of the wedding, shave cleanly or trim your beard sharply, and get your eyebrows tidied up.

3. Your Duties on the Big Day 📋

Besides looking handsome, you are the "Team Captain" for the day:

  • Leading the Khan Maak: You lead the procession! You’ll hold the bouquet and must prepare plenty of "Door Game Envelopes" filled with cash (give the spares to your groomsmen to hold).
  • The Problem Solver: If there’s a logistical issue on the morning of the wedding, relatives shouldn't bother the bride while she’s doing her makeup. You need to make executive decisions (or delegate them to your planner).
  • The Evening Speech: Prepare a short speech thanking the guests, your parents, and expressing your love for your new wife. Practice it in front of a mirror so you don’t freeze on stage!

💡 Planner's Tip: Grooms, during the months of wedding planning, your most important job is to be a support system for your bride. She will likely get stressed over tiny details. Simply offering your opinion (never just say "whatever you want") and giving emotional support will make the entire process so much smoother!

Frequently asked questions

How early should the groom get his suit tailored?

Start looking for a tailor at least 2-3 months before the wedding. This allows plenty of time for multiple fittings and final alterations.

Thailand is hot! What fabric should I choose for the suit?

For a morning or outdoor ceremony, opt for breathable fabrics like linen blends or light cotton. For an evening indoor reception, a structured wool blend works best to keep you looking sharp.

Does the groom need to wear makeup on the wedding day?

Yes! But it’s "grooming makeup"—just a light foundation to even out skin tone, conceal blemishes, and anti-shine powder so you don't look sweaty under the camera flashes.
